Bleeding and broken. Success and fame are no shield for struggle and pain. While Amanda Beard was garnering praise for her performance as a swimmer, she was also crumbling inside. This chasm between her inner life and her outer life led to her self-harming and her eating disorder. Amanda was finally able to acknowledge that she needed a way to deal with all the emotions that lurked within her, even as she was afraid the world would not accept what was there.

The thing is, Amanda Beard was not alone. You and I—everyone, even the people scrutinizing Amanda—have lots of emotions and experiences that we bury deep within ourselves, or at least try to bury. While our lives are, indeed, vastly different from one another’s, we each must deal with tough situations, and emotions are never easy. In fact, emotions are very, very hard. They are messy. Emotions are sometimes like a vat of cake icing that explodes all over our walls and covers everything. I mean, everything. That icing is glopped on every book in the room, any computer or phone you have, your shoes, all your clothes, everything. But when we try to pretend that we’re not feeling the things we are, it’s like putting on an outfit that is covered in that sticky, thick frosting and then telling ourselves we’re wearing clean clothes. Nothing strange to see here!

KEEPING IT REAL

Self-harm is a dangerous choice whereby we hurt ourselves because of the pain we’ve kept inside. It can take many forms, but they all only make the inner pain worse, never better.
